If you're reading this then it's too late, American Democracy has officially died.
Good Mourning Democracy.
Ok, ok. Maybe saying that democracy has "died" is a bit of an exaggeration. Who am I to complain? We still live in America with clean running water correct (See Flint Michigan)? With Universal Healthcare (under attack) and the #1 education system in the world with free college for all (As tuition rates creep higher), right?
Today, we merely live in a delusion of Democracy. The blissful dream of what our Founding Fathers meant. Even they were flawed, were they not? Do you know how many of our very noble Founding Fathers owned slaves? If you can't tell me off the top of your noggin it's ok. It just reflects what version of "history" your schooling has taught you. The history books and school books were written by men in power for men in power.
How did we arrive at the reality of 2017?
- How can corporations be people?
- Why do we incarcerate People, let alone People of Color, at rates never seen before in the history of the world?
- How can money be considered speech?
- Why are women, LGBTQ, and POC still fighting for their rights?
Who is to blame?
We could say the media is to blame and that would be true.
We could say that White Supremacy, boiling in this country every since the Gettysburg Address, is to blame and that may be true.
Blame the 65.8 million people who voted for him, and sure, technically that's true.
But the simple answer is: You. Me. Every last one of us.
Whether or not you voted for "him." We are ALL to blame.
"HUH? NOT ME, NOT I. I mean, I went to college and read books and I have gay black friends who are also women!!" Exclaimed the Democrat who was aghast at mere notion!
Yes even you.
But I get it. You have a life. You have kids, you work full-time, money might be tight, you are a student. Hell you could be a Full Time Worker/Student/With Kids/who doesn't have extra money. (Intersectionality). That is the reality of this country.
You might think it's not your job to fight for social justice and equality.
But you're wrong.
It is said that the true power of a politician resides in the apathy of the electorate. Yes, that means you give power to politicians when you DON'T care. The rights of the weak are trampled when you don't care. True justice for the common American can never found when it's people don't care.
Apathy is the death of Democracy.
Take a second to ponder politicians since the DAWN of time.
Think about politicians from ancient Rome and Greece. Think about the Roman Catholic Empire, about the British Empire. Think about America and our politicians from 1776 until now; have they been good? Good for all people?
If you can't name a corrupt politician from each of these empires, that's ok. Education and awareness is the path forward.
You see, America is broken.
But the privilege to say such things are only granted if you're white. If you are Black, LGBTQ, Latinx, or Muslim (to name a few), and you say America needs to be fixed you are told to "GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY!" -- "STOP CRYING YOU SORE LOSER!" -- "MERICA F**CK YEA!"
But this is your country. And we must fight everyday to ensure a more perfect Union. The idea of American Exceptionalism blinds us to the truth that we are not the lily white idea of perfection. Tirelessly, we must hold America to the high standards set forth by our Founding Fathers and trampled on by those now in power.
We have problems to fix. So let's get to work.
We must educate, organize and protest.
Remember that pain you felt on November 9th? The bubbling in your soul that led to binge eating, crying, or self medication--That should never be forgotten.
Are you an active participant in this Democracy? Are you ready to exercise your Constitutional Rights?
Good Morning Democracy is here to help.
